Blog 9 - Pitch

We had to do a pitch to present our ideas for the video that we are making and some of the information such as the target audience and the demographics of the band.

The point of a pitch is to set out the ideas and plans of the people that are to produce the music video for the band. this gives clear idea of that the producers are thinking of doing and then that sets out key ideas and themes as well as the way in which things will be done.

we looked at Facebook and YouTube, as well as the magazines that they have featured in and existing videos; this gave us a more solid idea of the target audience and the sorts of things that the bands have done before so that we could make the ideas in our video follow the same kind of themes.

This is the video of the power point:

Blog 8 - Initial ideas

Our initial ideas for the music video are:

That the video will be Split between Band Performance and a Story that will run through out the video, so that you see the and playing and then it is inter cut with a storyline.
the Story that runs throughout the video is about past Relationship between Boy and Girl. Girl breaks up with boy and gets together with someone else.

the boy is looking at old pictures of them together and burns them., He has flashbacks of their Relationship together (both good and bad). Gets angry In the flashbacks, it shows them starting to break up. The fashbacks will be discoloured to show that they are flashbacks.

At the start the boy bumps into the girl and they are happy to see each other, then turns out to be a dream. (switch between shots of band playing)

At the end the boy actually bumps into the girl (and she is with her new boyfriend) and he is happy to see her, but she ignores him /doesn't recognize him.

This all runs along the themes that run throughout the song, the actions in the video correspond to what the lyrics say.

Blog 7 - Copying an existing video

The existing music video that we copied is "Teenage Dirtbag" by wheatus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jJVRcCdvyY&ob=av2e

To do this we had to first of all learn how to use the cameras

some of the camera settings that we learned about are:

White balance -Adjusts the brightest part of a scene so it appears white. How a digital camera records color is affected by the source of light
AWB - auto white balance setting
Outside – (sun picture)
Inside – (light bulb picture)
Manual setting
• Set the white balance when you turn on the camera
Manual exposure 1/100
Shutter speed – 1/12 to 1/2000
Aperture/ ins – F stops, brightness of the image

Press the middle button 3 times to access the above settings.
Press left arrow brings up white balance then hit bottom button

How to turn the cameras on and off and how to put the camera onto the tripod safely.

The key things that we needed to remember when filming were that we must keep notes on every shot that we take so that when it comes to editing the film we know easily which shots were the best. ~This meant that we would also need a "clapper board" so that we could tell the shots from one another and see which takes were the best, comparing to the notes that we made. This will make the editing process quicker and easier.

The filming of the video meant that we had to look at the existing video and see what the locations and the shots looked like. we the had to find locations that looked the same or similar to the ones that we're in the shot.

Setting up the shots so that they looked as close as possible to the actual shots wasn't as easy as it looked to be.

There was more planing to the little section we filmed than would be thought.

Each part of the shot had to be looked at, the camera had to be set up and ready to film and the extras and leads had to be ready.

editing the video was the next thing that we had to learn how to do:

Key terms to remember are :
1. Firewire cable – connects the camera to the computer.
2. Scratch disk – the folder on the computer that your footage will be stored in.
3. Editing format – NTSC- America and Asian format = 30 FPS
PAL – European format = 24 FPS

to start with we had to
Turn on the camera and set it to VCR or playback
Put the tape in the camera
Go to ‘final cut pro – in the application folder
In the ‘final cut pro’ menu at the top left
Choose ‘easy set up’ option
‘final cut pro’ menu, ‘systems tab’, click the ‘set’ button
The click ‘movie’ and ok – this is where the footage is to be saved. Save the project

Log and capture
File menu – log and capture option
Click rewind

From the capture window – click play or space bar
Then click the ‘capture menu’ button, press ‘ESC’ on the keyboard to stop the capture process,

Name the clip!!

Keyboard shortcuts that we needed to know are:

  • ‘J’ key = rewind

  • X2 = double speed

  • X3 = triple speed·

  • ‘L’ key = fast forward

  • X2 = double speed

  • X3 = triple speed·

  • ‘space bar’ = play/ pause

using the Video Editing software- 'final cut pro'

We used Non-linear editing, this is an editing method that allows you to access any frame in a digital video clip regardless of sequence in the clip.

There are 3 stages of editing, these are :

Assembly edit - this is where the worse clips are deleted

Rough edit - the clips are roughly put together

Final edit - the clips are cut properly and put together in oder of sequence.

Blog 6 -Video Analysis

All of the songs that are by Green Day have the genre of Pop punk, alternative rock.
The first of the Green Day music videos that I'm going to analyse is 21 Guns

This video has had 24 206 394 views.
The areas that the music video is looked at the most in the world is shown below in the map off of Youtube:

The music video "21 Guns" has lots of close ups to convey the emotions of the male and female leads. The song is essentially about love and represents the 21st century breakdown, which is the name of the album that the song comes from. The narrative of the music video is that bullets are flying around the room and tearing everything apart but they are waling towards each other unharmed by the bullets.
This conveys the "power of love"
The video opens with the boy looking at the bullet in his hand, there is then close up of the bullet and it falls to the ground. It then cuts to Billy- Joe Armstrong singing the opening line of the song "do you know whats worth fighting for?" then we see all of the other members of the band.
The next video is The last of the American girls -

The map that is on Youtube that shows which countries in the world have been watching the music video on Youtube:

This video has had 1048 463 viewings worldwide.
The video starts with an image of a chair with some head phones on it. The video then moves on to Billy-Joe Armstrong singing and then to the drummer and then to the guitarist. The video switches between the band and images of a house that looks a bit run down and messy.
The narrative of this music video is the girl (who is the same girl from the 21 Guns video) doing everyday thing such as brushing her teeth or taking a bath. The setting for the main part of the video is in the desert and parts of the house are moved outside, for example the bed and the bath.
The video then switches between the band palying in the desert and her doing the ordinary say things.
And the last of the music videos is wake me up when September ends - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU9JoFKlaZ0&ob=av2n

This video has had 6,519,636 viewings on Youtube.
The map that shows the areas in which people have been watching the video form Youtube:

The video opens in a corn field where a boy and a girl are talking, there are close ups of them kissing, it teen goes to a extreme close up of the lead singers eye that moves across his face and to his lips and we see an extreme close up as he sings the beggining of the song. The camera isn't always in focus as it goes across his face. It then cuts to the corn field again and then to them leaving and going into town, (most of the rest of the video is of them doing normal things that teenage couples do)
It then cuts to the band playing, in like a warehouse. and then to people in the army. from there the audience see a war zone.
The images that are in the war zone (Iraq) of the debris is mirrored in the warehouse with the band using the lights.
It could be said that the videos meaning is of the events of the 9/11 bombings this is according to Wikipiedia. it could be seen as an anti- war segment to the video.

Blog 4- Permission

Copyright is important to the Music Industry because it means that no one can cover the song or music video and not pay for the right to cover it or say that they wrote the song or performed it first, when they didn't. illegal copying and down loading of music is an infringement of the copyright laws and it can be hard for the record labels to deal with this as it happens all the time and they cant really stop it.

To make the music video for the song we have chosen we have to write to the record company to ask for permission to use the song for the project.

The email says:

"Dear Sir/Madame

I am an A2 Media student at Sussex Downs college, we are doing a project on the music industry in which we have to make a music video, for an existing band and i am writing to you for permission to use the song "Whatshername" by green day for our music video.

Many thanks
Chantalle Sullivan"

Blog 3 - Song Choice

The song that we have chosen is "Whatsername" by Green day. It was a choice between "Whatsername" and "extraordinary girl". We have chosen this song because we like the song that we think that we could make a video that conveys the message of the song.

The lyrics of the song are:

"Thought I ran into you down on the street,
Then it turned out to only be a dream,
I made a point to burn all of the photographs,
She went away and then I took a different path,
I remember the face, but I can't recall the name,
Now I wonder how whatshername has been...

Seems that she disappeared without a trace,
Did she ever marry ole whatshisface,
I made a point to burn all of the photographs,
She went away and then I took a different path,
I remember the face, but I can't recall the name,
Now I wonder how whatshername has been...

Remember, whatever,
It seems like forever ago!
Remember, whatever,
It seems like forever ago!
The regrets are useless,
In my mind,
She's in my head,
I must confess!
The regrets are useless,
In my mind,
She's in my head,
From so long ago!
(Go... go... go... go...)
(Go... go... go... go... go...)

And in the darkest night,
If my memory serves me right,
I'll never turn back time!
Forgetting you, but not the time!"
