Blog 18 – Creative camera use

when filming we used our clapper board to create the effect of blurring, when we took the clapperboard away from the shot the images we were filming was slightly blurred, we did this deliberately. during the editing stages of making the video we put effects onto the videoo, for example for the transition effects we used lots of fade in and outs, and dissolves, we used these throughout the video but mainly at the begining We also used a transition effect called 'luminance map' and 'addictive dissolve' this was during the section of the video that was meant to be a dream. we then used 'dip to color dissolve'. the effects that were actually out in to the video were 'wide time' throughout, to create the blurry moments in the band section, 'extract' to make the dream in black and white. 'echo' to make it look more dream like and 'color tints' and lastly we used 'stop motion blur' on the band sections and when the lyrics 'seems like she disappeared without a trace'

Blog 17- Rejected Footage

the footage that is no good to us to make the music video had to be rejected, this was footage like, the actors not being ready to shoot, people waking infront of the camera while we were filming and if the cameras were moved to jerky or too unsedily. we filmed about 2hours worth of footage and about half of that was rejected for various reasons. https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_4bVkmSsWxZMmY4YTM0ZDgtNGJhMy00N2FkLWI3MjQtZDczMDVlMzk3MDZk&hl=en&authkey=CKPM9K4O we rejected this clip because the main character dropped her bag and then started laughing, this shot wouldnt have fittted in with the style of the video https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_4bVkmSsWxZMGY2MThiOTgtNmU1NS00ZTU2LThmY2ItOWY4NmEwNDg0MmE2&hl=en&authkey=CJ6ln-oJ this clip was rejected beacause the sun was shining into the camera and you couldnt see what was going on in the shot. we couldnt use the shot and it was automatically rejected. https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_4bVkmSsWxZNmFiYzA2MzktODU2My00YWUyLThkMTItMmJhNjUwYmQ5ODhj&hl=en&authkey=CJmo5P4B this clip was rejected because when the band were playing someone knocked a light over and this was knocked into shot, causing the band to react and ruining the shot. https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_4bVkmSsWxZMmM3Y2RlYWUtZDljNi00ZTgzLWI3NTAtZDQ3MTc1MmYzYmRi&hl=en&authkey=CK35gqMF in this clip it is the female lead and her friends; we decided not to use this shot because we had some better footage that fitted in with the words better than this clip. https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_4bVkmSsWxZMWI0YTA4MTUtNTQzMC00YjNjLWE3ZWQtZjRkYWY3NWJlNzcy&hl=en&authkey=CJ2Eq64C this last clip the sun was in the shot and everything in the shot was washed out.

Blog 16 - Advert

This advert attracts people to it by having a large image of the band, the advert is advertising the bands new single, there is a smaller image of the cover of the single in the right hand corner

The writting "OUT NOW" and "THE NEW SINGLE" is in capitals and bold, bigger than the rest of the text on the advert.

It has a plain white background so that the writting and the image stand out more.

ALL of the members of the band have eye contact with the camera and appear to be looking at the audience/ viwer of the advert. All the band members are dressed in black, so that they also stand out against both the white background but also the background of the actual image.

This advert is of a differnt genre of music to the Green day advert that i am making and alos, the After thas the same background as the back cover of the album, the image that is being conveyed is that the alum "One of the boys" shows her to be more of a tom-boy, and the songs on the album and the image are there to help to convey the more femine side to her.

Advert Flatplans

FINAL ADVERT

I chose the colours that i did for my advert because they are the same sort of colours that Green Day would have for a advert of their own. The colours that i have chosen for the text (red and whites) on the advert as it shows up clearly against the black background and the image. The image that i chose is the same image that is on the digipack, this helps the audience to idnetify with the image, they remember it from the adver t and the album and then they link it together. i chose the same font for the Green Day title of the advert as for the digipack, this also helps the audience to idnetify and easily match the two together. Blog 15 - Digipack

A digipack is a style of compact disc or DVD packaging, it is a form of jewel case, for holding one or more CDs or DVDs, in which the outer cover is of card rather than plastic.

it is important that the digipacks link someway to the music video because they have to have some kind of way to identify them as part of the same artist/band or tour. an example of this would be Madonna's Music digipack, tour, albums photoshoots and music video all have the cow girl theme to them and she is wearing the cow girl hat in them all as well, this links the items together and helps them to advertise each other when they are seen and makes me easily recognisable as the artist or band.

Analysing existing Digipaks

This is the digipack for Madonna's Music

The theme of cow girls is on the digipack for Madonna's Music as well as the tour and all of the CD that come form that tour, even the tour and any photo shoots have the same theme and the same colour scheme of candy pink. there is also bright colours theme.

there is also the theme of the haye that is on the front and the back of the digipack. This also conveys the themes of the cow girl

Another digipak that i am going to analyse is Nirvana's Unplugged in New York digipak.

The Nirvana digipak is covered with a simple design that has a simple colour scheme and pictures from the Unplugged tour in New York.

the colours of the digipak are simple and plain compared to other digipaks, the colour scheme consisting of white and orange. the digipak is kept pretty simple with some pictures of the band.

the barcode is at the bottom of the back of the digipak in the corner along with the warnings including the FBI warning about piracy.

the back of the digipak also has a listing of the songs that are on the it on the back accompied but images of the band.

MY DIGIPACK FLAT PLANS FLAT PLAN 1

The first of my digipack designs is of the back and front of the digipack, on the front cover there is a large image of the boy and the girl that are in the video, they are looking at eachother, this is an image that would be from when they were a couple. the title of "Green day" is written in red writting, the font is fairly straight and bold. The name of the album is at the bottom of the front of the digipack. on the back of the digipack there is a picture of the band that takes up most of the back cover and on top of this there is a list of tracks that are on the album. The back ground colour of the digipack would most likely be black.

this design for the inside of the digipack has the song lyrics from the title track on the left hand side and a picture of the band behind where the DVD will go. FLAT PLAN 2

The front of this digipack design on the right hand side (the front of the digipack) there is a large picture of the band, that takes up the whole of the front of the digipack. "green day" is written across the top in a cresent shape again the writting will be red and the background will be black. On the back of the digipack there will be a picture of the boy and girl at the top underneith that there is a track listing for the digpack, and then beneith that there is a box that contains the record label logos, any warnings etc. The inside cover of the digipack has on the left hand side the list of songs that that are on the album again, and on the otherside (the right) under the DVD there will be an image of the band with Greenday written over the top of it. the background colour of the inside will be red. FLAT PLAN 3 the next flat plan design on the front of the digipack there is a section down the side that has "Greenday " written down it and the name of the album then next to that there are three images a picture of the band then under that a picture of the boy and the girl and then again under that a picture of the band. the background for this design is again red.

On the back of the digipack there will be a large image of the band with the track listing ocver the top. The inside of this design for the digipack on the right hand side underneath where the DVD would be there is a split, at the top there is writing from the band, who they want to thank and then under that there will be a list of the venues that they have played at since they formed. the writing will be either red of white. and the background will be black to contrast the colours. On the other side (the left hand side) there will be 3 images, one of the band, in the middle and one of each the boy and the girl on their own. FLAT PLAN 4

the front of the 4th design there will be greenday written at the top, in a cresent shape in red writing, beneath that there will be apicture of the band that takes up most of the front cover. the back ground will be black. the name of the album will be written just above the photo in red writing.

on the back of the digipack (left hand side) there will be a track listing in a box at the top. beneath that there would be 3 small pictures of the band either on location or from other performances, and then under that there would be a section for the record label any warning logos and privacy logos. and all of this would be written in red or white writing.

and finally the final inside design for the digipack there would be greenday written on the left hand side in red or white writing, underneath that there will be a picture of the boy and girl together, either when they were happy or when they were not (like after a fight). the background for the whole thing would be black. on the right-hand side where the DVD would be there another image of the boy and girl but from when they were together. Fonts The font that i have chosen for the main font is 'Dumbnerd' form the DaFont website. i chose this font because it is a graffitti type font that conveys the syle of Green Day.

the font has sharpe edges and it conveys the mesaage that Green Day are a punk band and it fits in with the image of the band.

i change the colour of the font to red to match the style for greenday.

the other choice that i thought about for the main font in the digipack was:

although this font is a font that i liked and thought that it would fit in well with the digipack, is font has smoother egdes that make the font look neater, it doesnt give the entended effect of the punk band that they would be looking for.

I chose the font that i did becasue this font for me gave the right image and presented the sort of thing that i wanted it to, i hope that it will appeal to the target audience.

MY FINSIHED DIGIPACK

i chose the coours that i did for the front cover of the digipack because they match the punk image that Green Day have. the image on the front of the digipack takes up most of the cover, with the black background behind it helps to make the image stand out.

the inside of the digipack continues in the same style, of dark colours with the red writting.

The inside of the digipack is very simple, this is so the attention is drawn to the CD/DVD inside. The skills that i gained during this task were, the skills required to use the Adobe Photoshop software, the skills to use the cameras to take the photographs to put onto the digipack. the feedback that i got from facebook for the digipack was:

The target audince appear t0 like the digipack but there are some inprovements that i could make, for example the lighting and making the background colour more interesting.

Blog 14 - Shooting Diaries

This is the link to the call sheet https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bdsoIw0MdKtCmoqqaWAReS2Z_DIefRJjWEMq68fciN8/edit?hl=en&authkey=CO391ZYI

The call sheet was important because if we needed to get hold of one od the members of the band, an extra or a member oft he college staff then we needed to have the contact information for them easily all on one sheet as well as in our phones.

when filming the video we had to make sure that the locations we were filming in fitted in with the narravtive of the song.

when we were filming in the TV studio we had to make sure that we had all of the equipment ready before hand so that we could get the band to play the song 5/6 times and we could film form two angles to get the most coverage of the band.

Blog 13 - Shooting Schedule

We filmed the video mainly in our media lessons. These were every Tuesday morning 9 - 12 from the 11th January to the 15th March 2010 and then some Thursdays 12 - 2.

we fimed the band in the Tv studio on a wednesday 2nd Febuary 2010, form 2 untill 4.30

There had to be comunication on set which meant we had to use the clapperboards so theat the people on set knew when we were fliming, by saying action and cut and using the clapperboards also meant that editing would be easier, as we could distinguish one shot from another more clearly.

what was filmed in each session was dependant on the weather, time that was available to us and who was able to be at the shoot.

Blog 12- Health and Safety

The health and safety risks that are associated with filming such as: wires that are not safely out of the way, so that people can trip on them, these can be a hazard. every time we booked a camera we had to fill out a booking form, this i s that the college know who has the camera and it helps the college to make sure that the camera is under their insurance policy. permission to film in certain locations was required, for example in the TV Studio: this had to be booked.

the weather was also a safety risk as on some days it was raining and this meant that filming had to be done inside so as not to get the camera wet.

we also had to make sure that when we were filing that there were not things around that people could trip and hurt themselves on. not only the people in sh0t but the us operating the cameras as well.

We also had to check when filming in the road that there wasn't cars coming, the way that we did this was that everyone at the shoot had to be vigilant of what was around them and we had to make sure that when a car was coming that everyone and all the equipment was out of the way.

another thing that we did to ensure safety was to make sure that when we moved from location to location that we put all the equipment back into the camera box, folded he tripod up and move the equipment safely to the next location.

Blog 11 - Storyboard and Animatic

This the our storyboard:

some of the things within our storyboard had to change due to time conditions and being able to film in the places that we wanted.

Blog 10 - Mise-en-scene

In the video that we will be making we intend the boy will be wearing : Casual clothes: jeans, leather jacket or dark-coloured T-shirt, wearing make –up (eyeliner), this gives the theme of the band flow through the characters. It also creates the look for the main male lead that we want.

We intend the girl to be wearing casual clothes as well : Jeans, hoodie or top.

Make-up and maybe Sunglasses.

The band in our music video will wear similar clothing to the clothes that the band Green Day wear.
All 3 of the band members will be wearing black shirts and trousers, with 1 or 2 of them wearing either a White or Red tie.
Their hair will also be styled similar to Green Day and all band members will be wearing black eyeliner (as Green Day do) to keep in context with the band.

the locations for the video are:

Lewes town, in the centre of town

college, (the canteen, hallways and outside in the college grounds)

A bedroom

the props that we will use are;

pictures it the boy and girl for the boy to burn

Blog 9 - Pitch

We had to do a pitch to present our ideas for the video that we are making and some of the information such as the target audience and the demographics of the band.

The point of a pitch is to set out the ideas and plans of the people that are to produce the music video for the band. this gives clear idea of that the producers are thinking of doing and then that sets out key ideas and themes as well as the way in which things will be done.

we looked at Facebook and YouTube, as well as the magazines that they have featured in and existing videos; this gave us a more solid idea of the target audience and the sorts of things that the bands have done before so that we could make the ideas in our video follow the same kind of themes.

This is the video of the power point:

Blog 8 - Initial ideas

Our initial ideas for the music video are:

That the video will be Split between Band Performance and a Story that will run through out the video, so that you see the and playing and then it is inter cut with a storyline.
the Story that runs throughout the video is about past Relationship between Boy and Girl. Girl breaks up with boy and gets together with someone else.

the boy is looking at old pictures of them together and burns them., He has flashbacks of their Relationship together (both good and bad). Gets angry In the flashbacks, it shows them starting to break up. The fashbacks will be discoloured to show that they are flashbacks.

At the start the boy bumps into the girl and they are happy to see each other, then turns out to be a dream. (switch between shots of band playing)

At the end the boy actually bumps into the girl (and she is with her new boyfriend) and he is happy to see her, but she ignores him /doesn't recognize him.

This all runs along the themes that run throughout the song, the actions in the video correspond to what the lyrics say.

Blog 7 - Copying an existing video

The existing music video that we copied is "Teenage Dirtbag" by wheatus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jJVRcCdvyY&ob=av2e

To do this we had to first of all learn how to use the cameras

some of the camera settings that we learned about are:

White balance -Adjusts the brightest part of a scene so it appears white. How a digital camera records color is affected by the source of light
AWB - auto white balance setting
Outside – (sun picture)
Inside – (light bulb picture)
Manual setting
• Set the white balance when you turn on the camera
Manual exposure 1/100
Shutter speed – 1/12 to 1/2000
Aperture/ ins – F stops, brightness of the image

Press the middle button 3 times to access the above settings.
Press left arrow brings up white balance then hit bottom button

How to turn the cameras on and off and how to put the camera onto the tripod safely.

The key things that we needed to remember when filming were that we must keep notes on every shot that we take so that when it comes to editing the film we know easily which shots were the best. ~This meant that we would also need a "clapper board" so that we could tell the shots from one another and see which takes were the best, comparing to the notes that we made. This will make the editing process quicker and easier.

The filming of the video meant that we had to look at the existing video and see what the locations and the shots looked like. we the had to find locations that looked the same or similar to the ones that we're in the shot.

Setting up the shots so that they looked as close as possible to the actual shots wasn't as easy as it looked to be.

There was more planing to the little section we filmed than would be thought.

Each part of the shot had to be looked at, the camera had to be set up and ready to film and the extras and leads had to be ready.

editing the video was the next thing that we had to learn how to do:

Key terms to remember are :
1. Firewire cable – connects the camera to the computer.
2. Scratch disk – the folder on the computer that your footage will be stored in.
3. Editing format – NTSC- America and Asian format = 30 FPS
PAL – European format = 24 FPS

to start with we had to
Turn on the camera and set it to VCR or playback
Put the tape in the camera
Go to ‘final cut pro – in the application folder
In the ‘final cut pro’ menu at the top left
Choose ‘easy set up’ option
‘final cut pro’ menu, ‘systems tab’, click the ‘set’ button
The click ‘movie’ and ok – this is where the footage is to be saved. Save the project

Log and capture
File menu – log and capture option
Click rewind

From the capture window – click play or space bar
Then click the ‘capture menu’ button, press ‘ESC’ on the keyboard to stop the capture process,

Name the clip!!

Keyboard shortcuts that we needed to know are:

  • ‘J’ key = rewind

  • X2 = double speed

  • X3 = triple speed·

  • ‘L’ key = fast forward

  • X2 = double speed

  • X3 = triple speed·

  • ‘space bar’ = play/ pause

using the Video Editing software- 'final cut pro'

We used Non-linear editing, this is an editing method that allows you to access any frame in a digital video clip regardless of sequence in the clip.

There are 3 stages of editing, these are :

Assembly edit - this is where the worse clips are deleted

Rough edit - the clips are roughly put together

Final edit - the clips are cut properly and put together in oder of sequence.

Blog 6 -Video Analysis

All of the songs that are by Green Day have the genre of Pop punk, alternative rock.
The first of the Green Day music videos that I'm going to analyse is 21 Guns

This video has had 24 206 394 views.
The areas that the music video is looked at the most in the world is shown below in the map off of Youtube:

The music video "21 Guns" has lots of close ups to convey the emotions of the male and female leads. The song is essentially about love and represents the 21st century breakdown, which is the name of the album that the song comes from. The narrative of the music video is that bullets are flying around the room and tearing everything apart but they are waling towards each other unharmed by the bullets.
This conveys the "power of love"
The video opens with the boy looking at the bullet in his hand, there is then close up of the bullet and it falls to the ground. It then cuts to Billy- Joe Armstrong singing the opening line of the song "do you know whats worth fighting for?" then we see all of the other members of the band.
The next video is The last of the American girls -

The map that is on Youtube that shows which countries in the world have been watching the music video on Youtube:

This video has had 1048 463 viewings worldwide.
The video starts with an image of a chair with some head phones on it. The video then moves on to Billy-Joe Armstrong singing and then to the drummer and then to the guitarist. The video switches between the band and images of a house that looks a bit run down and messy.
The narrative of this music video is the girl (who is the same girl from the 21 Guns video) doing everyday thing such as brushing her teeth or taking a bath. The setting for the main part of the video is in the desert and parts of the house are moved outside, for example the bed and the bath.
The video then switches between the band palying in the desert and her doing the ordinary say things.
And the last of the music videos is wake me up when September ends - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU9JoFKlaZ0&ob=av2n

This video has had 6,519,636 viewings on Youtube.
The map that shows the areas in which people have been watching the video form Youtube:

The video opens in a corn field where a boy and a girl are talking, there are close ups of them kissing, it teen goes to a extreme close up of the lead singers eye that moves across his face and to his lips and we see an extreme close up as he sings the beggining of the song. The camera isn't always in focus as it goes across his face. It then cuts to the corn field again and then to them leaving and going into town, (most of the rest of the video is of them doing normal things that teenage couples do)
It then cuts to the band playing, in like a warehouse. and then to people in the army. from there the audience see a war zone.
The images that are in the war zone (Iraq) of the debris is mirrored in the warehouse with the band using the lights.
It could be said that the videos meaning is of the events of the 9/11 bombings this is according to Wikipiedia. it could be seen as an anti- war segment to the video.

Blog 4- Permission

Copyright is important to the Music Industry because it means that no one can cover the song or music video and not pay for the right to cover it or say that they wrote the song or performed it first, when they didn't. illegal copying and down loading of music is an infringement of the copyright laws and it can be hard for the record labels to deal with this as it happens all the time and they cant really stop it.

To make the music video for the song we have chosen we have to write to the record company to ask for permission to use the song for the project.

The email says:

"Dear Sir/Madame

I am an A2 Media student at Sussex Downs college, we are doing a project on the music industry in which we have to make a music video, for an existing band and i am writing to you for permission to use the song "Whatshername" by green day for our music video.

Many thanks
Chantalle Sullivan"

Blog 3 - Song Choice

The song that we have chosen is "Whatsername" by Green day. It was a choice between "Whatsername" and "extraordinary girl". We have chosen this song because we like the song that we think that we could make a video that conveys the message of the song.

The lyrics of the song are:

"Thought I ran into you down on the street,
Then it turned out to only be a dream,
I made a point to burn all of the photographs,
She went away and then I took a different path,
I remember the face, but I can't recall the name,
Now I wonder how whatshername has been...

Seems that she disappeared without a trace,
Did she ever marry ole whatshisface,
I made a point to burn all of the photographs,
She went away and then I took a different path,
I remember the face, but I can't recall the name,
Now I wonder how whatshername has been...

Remember, whatever,
It seems like forever ago!
Remember, whatever,
It seems like forever ago!
The regrets are useless,
In my mind,
She's in my head,
I must confess!
The regrets are useless,
In my mind,
She's in my head,
From so long ago!
(Go... go... go... go...)
(Go... go... go... go... go...)

And in the darkest night,
If my memory serves me right,
I'll never turn back time!
Forgetting you, but not the time!"

Blog 2 - Exploring Music Video

The four music videos that i have chosen from the The 50 Greatest music Videos are, 'Ashes to Ashes' by David Bowie, 'Common People' by Pulp, 'Oh so Quiet' by Bjork and 'Crazy in Love' by Beyoncé featuring Jay z.

The first of the music videos that I am going to analyse is 'Common People' by Pulp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skdjcv9Pbwo&a=VBDvzQBldlg&playnext_from=ML

This music video is from the band Pulp, they were formed in 1978 and split in 2002 , the video featured the actress Sadie Frost and a dance routine that was improvised by Croocker on the day of shooting.

The video is set in the 70's and the disco that is featured makes the viewers think of a college disco, (like a reflection of there past) where the lead singer (Jarvis Coocker) is in the foreground, there is a close up of his face.

The scene of the video then changes to in the supermarket, where Croocker is in a shopping trolley, this could symbolise a cage that he is trapped, maybe symbolising relationships.

The genre is Britpop, this is a sub genre of alternative rock, that originated in the UK.

The audience for this music video are the same as for the band, as The Rough Guide said it is "stripping away the glamour from britpop's idealisation of the working class "
